“The Flight of the Birds”
This painting is a water color on water color board. The colors are primary and have not been mixed but overlaid. This overlay technique was used in order to produce more purity of color.
The inspiration for the painting was the tone poem “Tapiola” by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Tapiola was the God of the Forest in Finnish legend. A long crescendo passage near the end of the composition made the artist think of the rushing of wings — hence the long crescendo of birds sweeping across the picture. Use the Play button below to hear this crescendo.
Painted in late 1930, 30 x 21 inches. Original in storage at Elverhøj. There are three other paintings from this period that will eventually be included in this online gallery.
