Debuting Saturday June 30 in the Museum Gallery is “The Escape Artist,” a new exhibition featuring ceramic sculptures by artist Wesley Anderegg. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday July 7 from 4 to 6 pm. In addition, a Gallery Talk by the artist will be held on Saturday August 4 at 4 pm.

Anderegg is opening his impressive private studio for a tour and demonstration on Saturday morning September 8, 10 am to noon. More information.

“I have always been a people watcher,” says Anderegg. “I watch what people do and imagine what they might like to do. Life and society are such that we cannot always say and do what we like. However, in the imaginary world in which my ceramic people live, they can.”

Anderegg’s ‘escape’ will have viewers looking outside the box and seeing things in a new way — and celebrating the power of imagination. Described as a little dark, a little funny, a little familiar and always entertaining, the work provokes emotion and thought. In addition to multifaceted subject matter and symbolic metaphor, the sculptures are nuanced by various glazes and textures. Varying in size from table top sculpture to floor standing installations, all the pieces are handbuilt using coiling, pinching and hollowing techniques. Some include fabricated steel and wood work created by the artist.

With a long list of gallery shows and museum exhibitions, this is Anderegg’s first Santa Barbara County exhibition. His work is included in collections at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian, Mint Museum of Craft and Design, and the Fredrick R. Weisman Museum in Minneapolis, among many others. He is also a talented ceramic instructor, teaching at workshops around the country.
