Despite the lazy days of summer in Solvang, selected artists are working hard to create new artworks to be exhibited in Beyond the Windmills: Barry Berkus & Family Art Collection. The display at Elverhøj Museum of History and Art shows the combined works of 14 artists, featuring painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media.

Art Berkus

Rita Ferri, exhibition curator, stated: “Artists are being invited to revisit or reinterpret their original artwork in the Berkus Collection. Using the town of Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley as a springboard, artists will look beyond the Danish veneer, beyond the windmills and wooden rooftop storks, and see what new truths they can find.”

Barry Berkus (1935-2012) was a visionary architect whose work was recognized nationally and abroad. His extensive art collection included works by national, international and significant regional contemporary artists. In 2005 Berkus donated a large number of pieces from his collection, in honor of his late wife, to the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture. This exhibition is a collaboration between Elverhøj and the County Office of Arts and Culture, and represents a diverse mix of media.

Exhibition programming includes a slide lecture and workshops.
