GATHER ROUND: HERD ANIMALS OF THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY
APRIL 14 -  JUNE 24, 2012

Santa Ynez Valley residents enjoy a rural lifestyle with Old West roots while embracing a rich contemporary cultural life. Pastures with horses, cattle, bison, sheep, goats and other herd animals dot the landscape and inspire the art community. Elverhøj Museum of History and Art celebrates these four-legged creatures in “Gather Round: Herd Animals of the Santa Ynez Valley,” a new art exhibition debuting Saturday April 14.

Eight area artists, working in a wide variety of mediums and styles, share their view of the herd animals found in the area. “Gather Round” viewers will be offered a wide range of experiences in ways of seeing these denizens of the field. The artists’ diverse approaches make the encounters with their subjects deep and involving in very different ways. Gestural abstraction or bold use of color may reveal one aspect of the subject, while a traditional rendering supplies another impression of the same animal.

Featured artists are: Susan Cobb, Suzan Hamilton-Todd, Joseph Knowles, Trish Clark Palmer, Luis Ramirez, Pat Roberts, C. Wood, and Seyburn Zorthian. Viewers can learn more about their artistic technique and inspiration when they gather for a free panel discussion Saturday May 12 at 4:00pm in the Museum Gallery.
