“East to West: the Kimono Series”
by Santa Ynez Artist Carol Wood

“East to West: The Kimono Series,” an art exhibition by C. Wood opens on October 24, 2015. In this solo exhibition, Wood pays homage to the tradition of the kimono with a series of large acrylic paintings which move from figurative to abstraction. She employs a variety of techniques and intricate detail to convey texture and contextualize the garments’ patterns, layers and folds.

The public is invited to meet the artist and celebrate at the opening reception on Saturday October 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. Light appetizers and beverages will be served. There is no charge for admission.

This exhibition also offers a special opportunity for collectors to experience and purchase fine works of art while raising funds to support operations and programs at Elverhøj Museum.

Wood’s life-long interest in Asian textiles grew out of early experiences with her aunt, a costume designer, on Hollywood studio sets. A display of kimono in 2014 fueled her passion and was the impetus for the kimono series. “I am inspired by artists whose medium is fabric,” says Wood, “and intrigued by the mix of patterns, colors and compositions.”

C. Wood paints in oils, pastels and acrylics, often focusing on everyday images and inspired by the area in which she lives. She fostered her painting style by attending seminars and takes inspiration from painters such as Van Gogh and Sorolla while pursuing her own interpretation. A resident of Los Alamos, Wood enjoys a career in art as well as interior and spacial design.

“East to West: The Kimono Series” will remain on view through January 24, 2016.
