August 3, 4 - 6 PM

September 21 and 22

Fine wood craftsmanship is on display in “Transitions: Wood as Art” — a new exhibition debuting August 3 in the Museum Gallery. Functional objects in beautiful, rare and exotic woods celebrate the talents of furniture makers, turners and carvers.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday August 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served; there is no charge for admission.

“The exhibition focus is on structure, rare and exotic materials, elegant lines, fine details, and beautiful finishes,” said Elverhøj executive director Esther Jacobsen Bates. “From tables to urns, and light fixtures to stools, the work is noted for its functional, enduring design while at the same time retaining a uniqueness and artistry.”

Items on display have been crafted by members of the Santa Ynez Valley Woodworking Guild, a group that has gained a reputation for originality and excellence. Members have been featured in every national magazine devoted to wood artistry and have traveled the country giving workshops. Formed in 1994, the Guild has expanded to include woodworkers from Atascadero, Nipomo and San Luis Obispo. Exhibiting members are Richard Farwell, Ken Frye, George Paes, Dave Seymour, Roger Combs, Robin Corell, Mike Magrill and Bud Tullis.

This is a special opportunity, as all the work is available for purchase. One section is dedicated to one-of-a-kind functional pieces, reasonably priced and ready to take home or give as gifts. This includes peppermills, cuttings boards, bowls and other small items priced from $12 to $100.

Adding depth to the exhibit are photographs that beautifully document the process of creating the work. To learn more about the materials, techniques and creative process, the public is invited to demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday September 21 and 22 between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Marquetry, wood turning, and inlay work are among the processes that will be displayed.
